Yvonne Gordon MBACP

Yvonne Gordon is an integrative counsellor registered with the BACP who works in private practice at The Awareness Centre. She has a Diploma in Integrative Counselling incorporating Person-centred and Psychodynamic approaches. She also possesses a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills & Theory and a Diploma in Mindfulness-Based  Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). She holds five certificates from her work with young people for school-based charity, Place2Be.  Her interests include transpersonal therapy and second-generational issues. She has experience of working one-to-one with cllents of all ages and backgrounds.

Yvonne emphasises the importance of the therapeutic relationship in her client work and is of the mind that clients have their own answers  within them if they are listened to sincerely with empathy and without judgement by the counsellor in a safe therapeutic space in which they can work on their mental and emotional challenges. Yvonne wishes to give her clients this space, working alongside them as they discover more about themselves and what they need to do within the supportive and contained environment of the counselling room. Being listened to whole-heartedly can be a transformative process which can enable the client to get a renewed sense of their ability to make new choices and decisions as they begin to see their difficulties with a different perspective and gain the courage to develop their potential. Yvonne sometimes draws on the tools and techniques of CBT which can facilitate clients in becoming more aware of their habitual thought patterns and how these are reflected in reactions and actions. She occasionally uses Mindfulness practice to help the client become aware of their feelings in the here-and-now. Yvonne believes that it is important to relate her approach to each individual client, although she acknowledges that counselling for most clients is about getting in touch with their innate ability to look at difficult feelings on the journey towards a fuller life. She has worked with older clients who have been bereaved, some of whom had not previously had counselling which enabled them to begin to move on. She has also worked with students suffering from anxiety, depression and low self-esteem issues and with professionals with confidence issues in the workplace, as well as issues stemming back to childhood which can result in long-term depression if not addressed.

In her work in schools she worked therapeutically doing counselling with several young people individually, encouraging them to express their feelings and work towards healthier coping strategies.

As a former journalist Yvonne realised her interest in hearing people’s stories while working on local papers where she met people from all stratas of society and cultural/educational backgrounds. Accordingly she is aware of the struggles – whether in the workplace, home, relationships or elsewhere – experienced by many people. She also specialises in depression, worry and managing stress. She has a BA (Hons) in which she studied world religions and history of art and has a keen interest in theatre.
